The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is started when your child is in nursery and continued in their Reception year at school.  Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development. 

Children will mostly develop the three prime areas first. These are:  

• Communication and language
• Physical development
• Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. 

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are: 

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

The class teacher uses these seven areas to plan learning opportunities and activities to meet the needs of every child. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it's suitable for very young children, and it's designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child's unique needs and interests and enable the class environment to meet them.

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. At Meadowcroft we have a 'free-flow' reception class room where children can freely choose their learning indoors or outdoors. They will find all areas of the curriciulum both inside the class room and outside in the reception garden.

At Meadowcroft we truly believe in working closely with parents. The reception class has an open door policy and parents are able to stay with their chidlren as they settle in to school life.  Subject to Covid restrictions.

We have an induction process that enables your child to make a smooth tranisition from nursery or home to school.

During the year there are six open sessions for parents/grandparents/carers to come with their child  and 'choose your learning' together.

At the end of the EYFS – in the summer term of the reception year in school – teachers complete an assessment which is known as the EYFS Profile. This assessment is carried out by the reception teacher and is based on what they, and other staff working with your child, have observed over a period of time. This will be shared with parents.
